Fairy Tern
(From Planet Earth II, Episode 1: Islands)
In a hidden cave of flesh, she built life,
Sculpted bones and molded muscles,
Encased them in a shell made
Out of her–small, delicate, and white.
It took him just one blow
To shatter the shell, two
And he punctured the half-formed heart.
“He made quick work of it.”
Devoured what he liked and left
Over.
“She knew something was amiss.”
“But her desire to incubate was strong.”
It is still alive, she cried
Bloody murder, nestling it in her white, downy breast,
Scarlet-yellow remains oozing out from under her.
