I refuse
To be abused
By a society based off numbers on tests
By politicians who chose to ignore our protests,
Where a church or a school
Can be a battlefield, too,
Where a man was slain
Killer devoid of chains,
Where a solution is a dream,
No more than a gleam
Of hope in this world
And a truth is unfurled
That we can be ugly, as a race
And it’s a truth we must face.
So I refuse.
Because you were not born in a slum and
Because you have a good dad and mum and
Because you were never attacked and
Because you were never shot at and
Because you go to a good school and
Because your worst worry is being cool and
Because your life is better than most
Means that the ones who do struggle are easy to dismiss
Because a life without problems is a life in pure bliss.
But all the while
The rich get richer when
The poor die off
And the economy is soaring
But not for long
And prejudice is common
A sad fact, but true,
And so many have fallen
To a man wearing blue.
And why?
A man wearing blue
Must be one who stops crimes,
Not one who initiates them!
And why, must I ask,
Are guns so easy to acquire?
After all the marches and protest, still?
Alas, They do nothing.
And why is it the victim’s fault?
What they wear is not an excuse.
Unconsciousness is not an affirmation.
Yet the victim is always left to be blamed.
And why are families ripped apart?
For what sick purpose?
I am appalled.
And some choose to ignore it all.
Refuse
To be abused
By a society based off numbers on tests
By politicians who chose to ignore our protests,
Where a church or a school
Can be a battlefield, too,
Where a man was slain
And the killer isn’t chained.
But a solution we will find,
Among our bright minds
And those who wish to reform.
And there will be a storm,
But we persist
But we persist
But we persist
